Overview
SSL Certificates are used to protect information whilst it is being entered into an online form. Typically used to protect credit card and personal information, an SSL certificate creates a secure channel between the visitor's Web browser and the server hosting the Web site.
Any information which is entered into a form protected by an SSL certificate is encrypted, preventing others from 'listening in' and capturing the information. The certificate is also responsible for displaying the gold padlock in the Web browser, which is often seen on shopping sites.

SSL Certificates are issued by third party certificate authorities. We have teamed up with one of the Worldwide leading authorities, Thawte, to provide our customers with 128-bit certificates*.
Although our Web hosting plans include access to a shared certificate for no additional charge, the details contained within the certificate and the address used to access it, relate to us rather than a specific Web site. For small Web sites this isn't a problem, however for large Web sites offering online shopping, we would strongly recommend the purchase of your own certificate.

True Verification
Before Thawte will issue a SSL Web Server certificate, they will validate the company name, domain name and telephone number using independent methods. They will also contact you by telephone to confirm that you have requested a certificate to be issued.
As a result of this, you need to be able to prove that you are who you say you are. Depending on your type of organisation we may need additional documentation from you. If this is necessary we will contact you once you have placed your order.
With SSL 123 certificates, Thawte simply check that the domain name being used is registered to the person or company requesting the certificate and under their control. Furthermore, the certificate only lists the Web site address, rather than company name and address details.
